The England national football team is controlled by The Football Association who are the governing body of English football,along with their rivals Scotland England are the oldest football nation in the world playing their first game in 1872.
Their home ground is Wembley,in 2001 the old stadium was demolished and England moved into the new Wembley in 2007.
The only trophy England have won to date is the World Cup in 1966,the tournament was played in England and they beat West Germany in the final 4-2,Geoff Hurst scoring a hat-trick in the process. Alf Ramsey was the man who led the team to an historic occasion,the squad included players such as Geoff Hurst,Roger Hunt,Martin Peters,brothers Jack and Bobby Charlton and of course winning captain Bobby Moore.
Over the years England have competed in many World Cups and European Championships,they reached the semi finals of both tournaments in 1990 and 1996 respectively,the 1996 European Championship was hosted by England where Terry Venables' team were beaten by arch rivals Germany on penalties.
England's most capped player is former goalkeeper Peter Shilton who was capped 125 times and the top goalscorer for England is Bobby Charlton who scored 49 times.
